David Yurman developed his love for art in New York at the young age of eleven years old. His interest was ignited into a passion, particularly after spending time in the bohemian town of Providence, Massachusetts. Once he graduated, he hitchhiked to Big Sur, California to truly experience the beatnik environment. He later returned to New York for an apprenticeship with sculptor Jacques Lipchitz.
After meeting Sybil, the artistic woman that would later become his wife and business partner, David Yurman utilized his artistic background to sculpt unique jewelry pieces. The Yurmans sold these pieces under the name Putnam Art Works at craft fairs across the country.
Yurman’s skillfully crafted jewelry pieces would sell out wherever they went, and after ten years, David and Sybil rebranded the company as David Yurman. Within the same year they won the World Gold Council’s Jury Award for their Starlight Necklace. A year later, David Yurman was awarded the Cultured Pearl Associations of American and Japan’s Designer of the Year award.
Two years later, in 1983, David Yurman created the infamous Cable Bracelet, featuring the iconic cable motif that Yurman would be known for worldwide. The cable icon would later be featured in every Yurman jewelry collection, including their timepieces. In 2003 they expanded production to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland where their timepieces are produced with exquisite Swiss craftsmanship.
After much famed success, David Yurman opened its first store in 1999 on Madison Avenue in New York City. The Yurmans’ son, Evan, joined the family business, continuing the tradition of unique and breathtaking jewelry design. Since the first store opened, David Yurman has expanded to the most established markets including Beverly Hills, Hong Kong, and Paris, marking their continued success.
